Salvador was Portugal's capital in Brazil until 1763 and the largest slave port in the Americas — around a million and a half people were landed here, and the city's music, food and religion follow from that. Candomblé is practised openly, capoeira was developed by the enslaved, and the carnival is a street event with trucks rather than a stadium parade.
