Belgrade stands where the Sava joins the Danube, which is why it has been besieged or fought over some 115 times and destroyed more than forty — the Kalemegdan fortress carries Roman, Ottoman and Austrian layers on the same rock. The nightlife happens on splavovi, barges moored on both rivers, and runs until the light comes back.
