Harbin was built by Russia from 1898 as a station on the Chinese Eastern Railway and filled with Russian, Jewish and Polish settlers — St Sophia's cathedral and the shopfronts of Central Street survive from that. The ice festival uses blocks cut from the frozen Songhua river to build illuminated palaces on a scale nowhere else attempts, at temperatures around minus twenty-five.
