Vítkovice ironworks operated in central Ostrava from 1828 to 1998, and rather than demolishing it the city opened the site — a blast furnace with a glass lift to the top, a gasholder converted into an auditorium, and a coal mine beside it. The Colours of Ostrava festival is held among the furnaces each July, which is the best argument for keeping them.
