Border Cities

Two languages on the street signs, two cuisines on one menu, sometimes two flags within living memory: border cities carry double lives gracefully. They reward travellers who like their identities layered.

A border city is one where a line drawn elsewhere organises daily life, and the line is usually younger than the city.

The line moved, the city did not. Gorizia woke up in 1947 with its railway station in Yugoslavia and itself in Italy, so Tito built Nova Gorica from nothing on the other side; a fence ran across Transalpina square until 2004 and the paving now marks it. Vyborg was Swedish for four centuries, Finnish between the wars and Soviet from 1944.

Two languages, one plan. Bolzano is bilingual by statute; Nicosia has run a buffer zone through its centre since 1974, in places a few metres wide, with a street of shops inside it left as it was.

Crossing is the experience. Where a bridge, a checkpoint or a river is the subject, the portrait says what is required to cross and whether it is currently possible.

Political care. These entries describe arrangements and dates, name disputes as disputes, and do not adjudicate them.

Stand on the line and look both ways.
