Messembria on the Rock

Portrait

The old town sits on a rocky peninsula joined to the coast by a strip a few hundred metres wide, which is why Messembria was worth founding by Thracians and worth taking by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans in turn. More than forty churches survive on forty hectares, most of them Byzantine, and the sea has taken about a third of the original town.
