The Heaven Lake Crater
Nature Gateways
Portrait

Heaven Lake fills the caldera of a volcano whose eruption around 946 was among the largest of the last two thousand years, throwing ash as far as Japan; the lake is the deepest in China and the border with North Korea runs across it. The mountain is sacred to Koreans and Manchus alike, and the Songhua river starts at its waterfall.
