Jiuzhaigou means nine village valley, for the Tibetan settlements in it, and its lakes take their turquoise and gold from calcium carbonate deposits and algae — the water is so clear that fallen trees on the bottom appear suspended. A 2017 earthquake damaged several of the lakes and closed the valley for two years; it reopened with visitor numbers capped.
