Macau
The Portuguese Wager
Portrait
Portugal held Macau from 1557 until 1999, the longest European presence in Asia, and legalised gambling in 1847 to pay for the administration; the monopoly ended in 2002 and revenues overtook the Las Vegas Strip within four years. The old town's baroque churches and the ruined façade of St Paul's stand a few streets from the casinos.
