Sanya lies at the southern tip of Hainan on the same latitude as Honolulu, and since duty-free status arrived in 2011 the bay has filled with the resorts that Chinese travellers once flew to Thailand for. Come for what the coast does well — warm water in January, seafood markets, and the Li and Miao villages inland that predate all of it.
