Yixing zisha clay is porous enough that a pot absorbs the tea brewed in it — a pot is used for one variety only and develops a patina over years, which is why they are never washed with detergent. The tradition dates from the Song, master potters sign their work, and antique pots reach prices that have nothing to do with function.
