Craft & Design Capitals

One town, one craft, centuries of practice: violins, porcelain, watches, perfume, cashmere. Craft capitals let you watch the object being born a street away from where you buy it.

A craft town is one where a single skill has been practised long enough to shape the place, and the skill is usually still commercial.

Material first. Grasse grows jasmine and May rose because tanners there perfumed gloves in the sixteenth century. Limoges makes porcelain because kaolin was found at Saint-Yrieix in 1768. Biella's mills use Alpine water soft enough to take dye without hardness. Remove the local material and the industry has no reason to be there.

The knowledge is transmitted, not archived. Valenza has around a thousand jewellery workshops in a town of twenty thousand, taught in a local school and passed within families. Kanazawa beats gold leaf to a ten-thousandth of a millimetre in a humidity that suits it.

Interruption and revival are part of the story. Glashütte was nationalised in 1945 and its brands vanished; descendants refounded them after 1990, and German law now restricts the name.

Nothing announces itself. These towns are quiet and the workshops have no shopfront. Arrange the visit.

Ask what the water, the clay or the air does here.
