Double Ikat, One of Three
Portrait
Double ikat — the pattern dyed into warp and weft separately, then made to meet on the loom — is woven in three places on earth, and this Bali Aga village is the only one in Indonesia. The thread is cycled through candlenut oil and ash in forty-two-day soakings up to a dozen times before anyone ties a pattern, and the cloth is required at tooth-filing, marriage and death.
