The Minaret That Became a Belfry

Portrait

The bell tower of São Clemente is the minaret of the mosque that stood there, kept and re-hung rather than pulled down, and the taipa keep of the castle survives from before the town was taken in 1249. The market hall was inaugurated in June 1908 to the design of Mota Gomes, in a neo-Árabe manner inside the Art Nouveau movement, which makes the building a nineteenth-century town's idea of its own Moorish century.
