Switzerland invented the winter season on a wager in 1864 and has organised much of its Alpine entry list around the consequence. The country also supplies the atlas's clearest example of restraint as policy — Lech capping skier numbers, Saas-Fee banning cars — and a banking capital whose lake is clean enough to swim in from the middle of the city.
