The United Kingdom contributes the industrial beginning — coke smelting, the first iron bridge, stainless steel found by accident — and the country houses that the Grand Tour paid for. Its university towns are the oldest continuous institutions in the atlas, and its islands, from Orkney to the Isle of Man, hold legal and archaeological arrangements found nowhere on the mainland.
