Santo Domingo has the first cathedral, the first university and the first hospital built by Europeans in the Americas, and its grid of 1502 became the model exported across Spanish America. Columbus's brother laid it out; the explorer's remains are claimed both by the lighthouse monument here and by Seville, and DNA testing has not settled it.
