Genoa
Republic of Merchants
Portrait
Genoa financed the Spanish crown, ran banks before most of Europe had them, and built the tallest houses in the medieval world because the mountains left no room to spread — its caruggi are alleys a metre wide between six-storey blocks. The Palazzi dei Rolli were private houses registered by lot to lodge visiting dignitaries, since the republic had no royal palace.
