El Gouna

Egyptian developer Samih Sawiris began building El Gouna in 1989 on twenty islands cut into the shoreline lagoons, with its own hospital, airport and building code in Nubian style. Kitesurf or dive — the reefs offshore are the reason the Red Sea coast exists as a destination — and the Eastern Desert opens up from here.
