Ethiopian emperors ruled from mobile camps until Fasilides settled at Gondar in 1636 and built a stone castle, followed by his successors until the compound held six — an architecture that borrowed from Portuguese, Indian and Axumite sources and looks like nothing else in Africa. Debre Berhan Selassie church nearby has a ceiling of eighty winged angel faces.
