The Nguyễn emperors built their capital here from 1802 on the plan of Beijing's Forbidden City, with a purple forbidden city inside a citadel inside a walled city; the tombs of the emperors are scattered along the Perfume river, each designed by its occupant. The battle of Huế in 1968 lasted twenty-six days and destroyed much of the complex, which is still being restored.
