Saint-Malo's privateers held royal licences to raid enemy shipping and made the town rich enough to declare itself an independent republic for four years in 1590. In August 1944 Allied bombardment destroyed most of the walled city; it was rebuilt over twelve years using the original granite, and the seam between old and new is genuinely hard to find.
