The wall ends here at the Old Dragon's Head, a rampart built out into the Bohai Sea, and the pass behind it was the strategic hinge of northern China. In 1644 the Ming general Wu Sangui opened the gate to the Manchus rather than surrender to a rebel army, and the Qing dynasty entered China through it.
