Kotor
Fjord of the Balkans
Portrait
Kotor sits at the head of a drowned river canyon that looks like a fjord, and its fortifications run four and a half kilometres from the sea up the mountain to the fortress of San Giovanni — 1,350 steps, built and rebuilt by Byzantines, Venetians and Austrians. The bay's narrow entrance was closed with a chain across the water when danger came.
