Tbilisi means warm place, for the sulphur springs a king is said to have found while hunting, and the domed bathhouses over them are still the city's social institution. The old town's wooden balconies, carved and cantilevered over the street, survived the twenty-nine sackings the city counts in its history, and the current argument is about restoration versus replacement.
