Yogyakarta is Indonesia's only province still governed by a monarch — the sultan is hereditary governor by national law — and the kraton palace remains a working court with its own gamelan orchestras and batik workshops, where certain patterns were reserved for royalty until 1940. Borobudur and Prambanan are both within an hour.
