Cologne cathedral was begun in 1248, abandoned for three centuries with a crane left standing on the unfinished tower, and completed in 1880 to the original plans; it took fourteen aerial bombs in the war and stood while the city around it was flattened. The Roman-Germanic museum next door is built over a third-century villa floor found while digging an air-raid shelter.
