Glasgow built a fifth of the world's ships and put the profits into collections — the Burrell, the Kelvingrove, the Hunterian — and into Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose School of Art of 1909 remains the most original British building of its century, twice gutted by fire and being rebuilt again. The music scene has produced bands continuously since the 1980s and the venues are unglamorous by policy.
