The Cantor's City
Portrait
Bach was cantor of the Thomaskirche from 1723 until his death in 1750, writing a cantata most weeks for the city's churches, and the boys' choir he directed has existed since 1212 and still sings there on Fridays and Saturdays. Mendelssohn, Schumann and Clara Wieck all worked here too, and the Gewandhaus orchestra, founded by merchants in 1743, is the oldest civic orchestra in the world.
