The Ninety-Five Theses
Sacred Cities
Portrait

Luther is said to have nailed ninety-five theses to the door of the Castle Church on 31 October 1517 — the nailing itself is disputed, but the theses were certainly sent to his bishop that day, and printing carried them across Germany within weeks. Luther and Melanchthon are both buried in the church, and the town has been a place of Protestant pilgrimage ever since.
