Knossos, four kilometres south, was the centre of Minoan Crete and produced Linear A and Linear B — the second of which turned out, when deciphered in 1952, to be an early form of Greek. Heraklion's archaeological museum holds the frescoes and the Phaistos disc; Arthur Evans's concrete reconstructions at the palace itself are still argued about.
