Málaga was a working port with a bad reputation until the Picasso Museum opened in 2003 and thirty more museums followed, converting warehouses and a customs house into the densest gallery quarter in Andalusia. The old town deserves a full day on foot; eat espetos — sardines grilled on a boat spit — at Pedregalejo, and use the city as the gateway it is to Granada and Ronda.
