The Maya fortified this clifftop port between 1200 and 1500 as a trading station for obsidian and jade, and it was still occupied when the Spanish sailed past. Come to the ruins at opening time before the heat and the coaches, then decide about the beach road, which has become an expensive strip of its own and is a different subject entirely.
