Mycenae

The Lion Gate
Lost Cities & Ruins
Gateway town: Nafplio
Portrait

Mycenae's Lion Gate has stood since about 1250 BC, and behind it Schliemann found shaft graves with gold death masks in 1876 — he wired that he had gazed on the face of Agamemnon, which was wrong by three centuries but not by much in spirit. The citadel comes first, then down into the beehive tomb called the Treasury of Atreus, whose corbelled dome held the span record until Rome.
