Nafplio
First Capital of Greece
Portrait
Nafplio served as Greece's capital from 1823 to 1834, and the neoclassical old town beneath the Palamidi fortress was built in those years by a state inventing itself. Nine hundred and ninety-nine steps climb to the fortress at dawn, the Arvanitia rocks are for swimming, and Mycenae, Epidaurus and Tiryns all lie within half an hour.
