Cáceres sent an unusual number of conquistadors to Peru and Mexico, and those who returned built fortified stone palaces inside the walls — some with towers deliberately truncated on royal order, to stop the nobility fortifying against the crown. The old town has no visible modern intrusion at all, which is why it is filmed so often.
