Provins
The Champagne Fairs
Portrait
Provins hosted two of the six Champagne fairs, where merchants from Flanders and Italy met for weeks at a time and where the letter of credit and much of European commercial law were worked out. The fairs died when sea routes opened, and the town kept its ramparts, its tithe barn and its underground galleries because nothing replaced them.
