Louis-Henri de Bourbon believed he would be reincarnated as a horse and built stables for 240 of them in 1719 — grander than most palaces, and still holding a working equestrian school. The château's Condé museum keeps the second-largest collection of pre-1850 French paintings after the Louvre, hung as its owner arranged it and forbidden by his will to be moved.
