Frederick the Great designed Sanssouci himself in 1745 as a single-storey vineyard palace with twelve rooms — deliberately small, French-speaking and private — and had himself buried on the terrace beside his greyhounds, which took two hundred years to happen. The Cecilienhof, elsewhere in the park, hosted the 1945 conference that divided Europe.
