Amboise

Charles VIII was born here and brought Italian craftsmen back from his 1495 campaign, importing the Renaissance to France through this château; Francis I later invited Leonardo da Vinci, who arrived in 1516 with the Mona Lisa in his luggage and lived at Clos Lucé until his death three years later. He is buried in the castle chapel.
