Mysore / Mysuru
The Sandalwood Court
Portrait
The Wadiyars ruled Mysore for six centuries with one interruption, and after the palace burned in 1897 they hired a British architect to rebuild it in Indo-Saracenic style — it is now lit by around ninety-seven thousand bulbs on Sundays and during Dasara. The city gave its name to sandalwood soap and to a style of silk still woven here.
