Toledo was the capital of Visigothic Spain, then a Muslim city, then the seat of Castile, and its translation school turned Arabic and Hebrew texts into Latin — a substantial part of Greek philosophy reached Europe through this town. Synagogues built by Muslim craftsmen for Jewish congregations later became churches, which is the city's history in one building.
