Fontainebleau housed thirty-four French sovereigns over eight hundred years — longer than any other royal residence — and Francis I brought Rosso and Primaticcio here in the 1530s, whose work created the School of Fontainebleau and carried Italian mannerism into French art. Napoleon signed his abdication here in 1814 and said goodbye to his guard on the horseshoe staircase.
