Gjirokastër
The Stone City
Portrait
Gjirokastër's houses are towers of stone with slate roofs, built as fortified family compounds with gun slits, and the whole hillside is roofed in the same grey stone. Enver Hoxha, who ruled Albania for forty years, and Ismail Kadare, the novelist who wrote about that rule, were both born here — a coincidence the town handles with care.
