Bodh Gaya
Tree of Awakening
Portrait
A descendant of the original fig stands beside the Mahabodhi temple, and around it Buddhist nations have each built a monastery in their own architecture — Thai, Bhutanese, Japanese, Tibetan — so a walk of twenty minutes crosses the whole Buddhist world. Sit under the tree in the early morning with the monks rather than photographing it, and visit in winter when the Dalai Lama sometimes teaches.
