Portrait
Mumbai was seven islands granted to Charles II as part of Catherine of Braganza's dowry and leased to the East India Company for ten pounds a year; land reclamation joined them by 1845 into the peninsula the city occupies. It produces more films than Hollywood, houses one of Asia's largest informal settlements at Dharavi, and its Victorian Gothic railway terminus is a World Heritage site.
