Imam Reza died here in 818 and the shrine over his grave has grown into a complex covering nearly six hundred thousand square metres — one of the largest religious buildings in the world, receiving over twenty million pilgrims a year. The city's name means place of martyrdom, and non-Muslims may enter the outer courtyards but not the shrine itself.
