Darius began Persepolis around 518 BC as a stage for the New Year procession of tribute, and the Apadana staircase still shows twenty-three delegations bringing gifts, each carved in its own dress. Alexander burned it in 330 BC; go in late afternoon when the low sun raises the relief from the stone, and climb to the rock tombs above for the plan of the terrace.
