Merv
Queen of the World
Gateway town: Mary

Merv was an oasis of walled cities built next to each other over two thousand years, and by the twelfth century it rivalled Baghdad — until the Mongols destroyed it in 1221 and, by most accounts, killed nearly everyone. What remains is earth architecture on an enormous scale: the Great Kyz Kala walls, the sultan's mausoleum, and outlines of five cities in the sand.
