Husayn, the Prophet's grandson, was killed with his companions at Karbala in 680 in the event that defined the Shia–Sunni division, and his shrine stands beside that of his half-brother Abbas. The Arbaeen pilgrimage forty days after Ashura draws crowds estimated in the tens of millions walking from Najaf and beyond — by most counts the largest annual gathering of people on earth.

Restricted by faith Shrine access is restricted; the city itself is open.
